First Leeds Zen Peacemaker Circle, Sat 30th August

The first Leeds Zen Peacemaker circle took place on Saturday. Three people were present- Steve (Steward and Facilitator), Anna and Zang. The meeting took place in Anna's house and was a very open-hearted, honest coming together. Steve introduced the idea of the Circles, and we had several different activities- Council Circle, a session of Hindu meditation, and Zazen. We used some animal 'medicine cards' to stimulate discussion about our own life and experience at the moment, and ended with a walk to an early-medieval church and graveyard, where we concluded the meeting with a checking-out circle and a dedication. It was a great beginning, which hopefully has planted a good seed for the future!

This evening at the Edgeley Zen Group, we celebrated the anniversary of the great Sufi poet Rumi. We explored a little practice of turning around the heart, and then in our regular Council Circle, Les played extraordinary sounds on a crystal bowl while one by one we each stood up and turned for a few minutes in the centre of the circle. We dedicated the evening to the soul of Mevlevi Postneshin Shaikh Jelaluddin Loras, pictured above, son of our late Shaikh Suleyman Hayati Dede, who passed from this world last Monday. Leicester Zen Peacemaker activities get going!

We've started to hold regular trainings in Zen and Buddhist meditation in Leicester now, inviting people to Zang and Laura's bungalow in Glenfield for individual or group practice. Monday nights will be a weekly Great Heart Circle similar to Manchester's last year. Starting at 7.30 each week, people are invited to share in relaxation, Zen meditation, simple movement exercises and a weekly mini-feast to end! The first weekly meeting was tonight (Monday 6th April) and began in a good spirit with friendly, warm-hearted people coming along for the first time. I hope this will be the beginning of a creative and supportive Zen community here in Leicester, to link with the ones growing in Manchester and Leeds.

The Zen of Tron! Review of new Tron Legacy movie from Disney

I went to see Tron: Legacy on Saturday night in Leeds. I love sci-fi movies anyway, but I went particularly because the founder of the Zen Peacemakers, Bernie Glassman, was involved as a consultant for 'mythic' material in the planning stage. He's a friend and informal Zen teacher for some time to Jeff Bridges, which provided the link. Going to the cinema this month has now a double Bernie Glassman element: the film involved him, and the Ben and Jerry's icecream in the foyer includes chocolate fudge brownies from the Greyston Bakery outside New York, founded by Bernie to employ homeless and other local excluded people... I won't give a summary of the movie, plenty of other online reviews do that already. I found the film a good watch, great special effects (and I only saw the 2D version, so 3D must be amazing), and the leading actress was so beautiful I couldn't help falling for her (which was the aim, I think!)
